Looking at Me Looking at You

Looking at Me Looking at You
If you catch me
Looking at you
Strategically well positioned
Some rows behind you
Right at the other end of the lecture hall
So that I have to turn slightly in your direction
To have a better view of the professor
Or: hidden behind a traffic sign
Opposite the entrance of the bar
To catch a last glimpse of you
Before you disappear into the night
You will see me frown.
Two ways to go from here,
Two follies to choose from:
Bother you or bury you.
Bother you and ignore
My own market research
Invest in a campaign doomed to fail
To raise a demand where there is none.
I suck at marketing.
Or: Bury you. Don’t worry.
You are not the man I like.
You are just my idea of him.
When you rot in your grave in my mind.
You won’t mind, your grave will be beautiful.
It’s just that cadaveric poison.
might not be healthy for me.
I only prefer you to him
because you can be addressed.
Which is stupid.
Which is why I frown.
Do you see?
Yet there is hope
For no particular reason
As there is always hope
That the next time I see you
I could just, you see,
smile.
I could be one of those girls
who smile all the time
after all.
If you catch me
Looking at you
Strategically well positioned
Some rows behind you
Right at the other end of the lecture hall
